With the rising cost of food recently, and the fact that our chickens have stopped laying completely (all 29 of them!) I’ve been looking for ways to cut our grocery budget. I stumbled across this super easy Amish White Bread and it has become a staple in our house. I also love that I know what ingredients it’s made with. I use unbleached organic bread flour, but any all-purpose unbleached flour will work. My family begs for it! It takes only a few minutes to make before letting it rise twice and baking it, making it a great addition to your recipe collection.
We love to top ours with fresh butter or my homemade strawberry jam. I store mine in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag and it lasts for quite a few days.

Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 tsp active yeast (or 1 packet)
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 3 cups unbleached flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 Tbsp vegetable, canola, or olive oil (I use Olive Oil)
- 2 Tbsp butter, melted
Directions:
- In a small bowl, combine yeast, water, and sugar. Let sit for 10 minutes or until bubbly. If it doesn’t bubble, your yeast has kicked the bucket on you and you will need fresh yeast.
- In your KitchenAid mixer w/ the dough hook attachment, sift flour and salt.
- Add your yeast mixture and oil to the flour. Turn the mixer to medium and allow it to knead until the dough no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl, about 10 minutes.
- Roll into a tight ball and transfer to a greased bowl. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a clean hand towel and let rise in a warm, dark, draft-free place until doubled in size, approximately 60-90 minutes.
- Deflate and shape into a log so it will fit in a 9″x5″ loaf pan. Again cover loosely with plastic wrap or hand towel and let rise for 50-60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
- Brush the crust with the melted butter and let cool for 10 minutes in the pan.
- Remove from pan and transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
- Enjoy!
